Informal meeting at ARNOVA
This summer, ERNOP joined ISTR as institutional member. We were featured in this summer’s ISTR newsletter (p.10), the text of which is attached.
It would be nice to meet informally with all ERNOP members present at the ARNOVA conference at the ISTR reception, which will be held at Friday November 20, 6.30 pm at the Lobby Court Bar in the conference Hotel (Cleveland Renaissance Hotel). If people are interested we could also go for dinner afterwards. Contact Pamala if you like to join for the ISTR reception and/or diner.
3. ISTR conference
Next summer (July 7-10, 2010), the ISTR conference will be held at the Kadir Has University in Istanbul. As institutional member, we are specially invited by ISTR to propose a colloquium. The deadline for proposing this colloquium is October 19. If you would like to participate in this colloquium and have ideas/suggestions for the contents, contact Pamala. More information can be found at
www.istr.org.
4. ERNOP publication
The State of Giving Research is an output of a meeting held in January 2008 at VU University in Amsterdam, attended by many of the leading European academics who focus on charitable giving and philanthropy. This meeting was convened to establish a new European Research Network on Philanthropy (ERNOP), which seeks to increase the visibility and quality of philanthropic studies in Europe. Whilst every EU country has a philanthropic sector, and there is general agreement regarding the importance of understanding this area of activity, different definitions of philanthropy and different methodologies for collecting data have stymied attempts to generate pan-European findings. This publication is a first step in rationalizing knowledge about philanthropy across the continent. It contains information on household giving in 12 EU countries, written by a respected scholar working in each country. Each of the 12 chapters explains what datasources are available, what kind of information they provide, the positive and negative aspects of each datasource and a summary of available knowledge about household giving in that country. The editor, Pamala Wiepking, concludes that all 12 countries are undertaking serious studies of philanthropy but their ad hoc manner and lack of consistency makes it difficult to draw useful comparisons. However, it is hoped that ERNOP will facilitate more collaborative working and enable researchers to tackle difficult but important questions about the role of philanthropy within modern EU states to ensure, “there is a bright future for the study of philanthropy in Europe”.
5. Next ERNOP meeting: Focus on Research
We would very much like to organize the third ERNOP meeting in January or February 2010. We are looking for hosts for this meeting, preferably in South or Eastern Europe, as the first two meetings have been held in North-West Europe. Contrary to the first two meetings we would like the third meeting to focus more on research and less on organizational matters. If you have ideas and/or would like to help organize this meeting, please contact Pamala.
6. Sister network on philanthropy in Europe:
EVPA: European Venture Philanthropy Association
The European Venture Philanthropy Association (EVPA) is a fast growing membership association supporting and promoting venture philanthropy (VP) across Europe. From a standing start in 2004 it has grown to 120 members in more than 20 countries, giving EVPA unique access to the development of venture philanthropy practice in Europe. EVPA supports its members by providing a forum for mutual learning, data and research on venture philanthropy, and training programmes on topics relevant to all stages and activities of a venture fund.
Now in its fifth year EVPA is making an enhanced commitment to nurture, process and disseminate knowledge about venture philanthropy in order to better serve its members and promote the movement across Europe. Based on the foundation of its own learning, training and research processes, EVPA is launching its Knowledge Centre, to be the hub for European knowledge on venture philanthropy.
The Knowledge Centre’s mission is:
· To nurture and develop the practical knowledge of VP in its members
· To ensure EVPA is fully connected with and actively networking with all engaged in the practice and study of VP
· To be the central hub coordinating all activities within EVPA where information and research is commissioned, shared, collected and analysed.
· To facilitate the dissemination of information internally to members and externally, through publications, training and events. Dissemination beyond EVPA members is a contribution of thought leadership in building the field of venture philanthropy.
During 2010 EVPA will launch the Knowledge Centre’s micro-site on the organisation’s main website. EVPA publishes an annual directory of members, and has published a number of practitioner papers. All are available on EVPA’s website.
